Do You Treat Your Body as a Gift From God?

Diane Burton • Jul 08, 2017

When you give a gift to someone how do you want them to accept it?

When you give a gift to someone how do you want them to accept it?

How do you want them to use it? How do you want them to treat it?

I know when I give someone a gift, I really hope they like it. I hope it puts a smile on their face and they find it useful for their life. And, when they open the gift, I want them to know I put thought into their gift, that it wasn't something thrown together because I had to give them a gift.

What about your gift from God, your body? Do you really know for a fact that it is a gift from God? If so, what does your gift do for you?

Before you answer the question, what does your gift do for you, I want you to think about gifts you have received from others and what they do or have done for you.

I've received gifts of flowers, gift cards to my favorite clothing store, pedicures, massages, cookware (I wanted), cars, bonuses in my career, time with family, restaurant gift cards, wedding gifts (41+ years ago), baby gifts (39 years ago), etc. The list of gifts over the years is endless and to be honest, I've forgotten what many of those gifts were; however, at the time, it put a smile on my face and made me feel special to think someone took their time and money to purchase something for me.

Now, I want you to think about your gift from God, your masterpiece, your body. What has it done for you in the past? What does it continue to do for you now? I want you to really dig deep to answer this question. Instead of just saying, "my body provides the 5 senses - touch, taste, smell, see & hear"; I encourage you to be very specific.

When I first started thinking about answers to this question, one of my first thoughts was how it produced another life, twice - what a gift. How do you put into words this amazing process a woman's body goes through to produce another life!

I also think about the times I hurt myself - stitches on my knee, the back of my leg, in my head, two of my fingers - none of this was at the same time - all different accidents and many others. I no longer tell myself I'm a klutz - I now say, "I used to have accidents." But, back to the thought. The beautiful gift from God is that He designed my body to heal. Whether it's a big wound or a small wound - it's designed to heal. And, I've discovered that when I take better care of my gift, it heals better and faster.

I think about the gift of emotions - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, self-control, faith - the fruit of the Spirit, another gift from God. There are also emotions of sadness, grief and many others. Are they also gifts? Yes, because it allows us to receive comfort from God, learn lessons and then be able to serve others. Wow, what a gift!

Have you heard the saying, "the gift that keeps on giving?" That's what your body is - a gift that keeps on giving. And, as long as we have breath within us, our body gives these gifts on a daily basis.

I encourage you to pay attention to what your gift does for you every second of every day - whether you are awake or asleep - it is doing something for you.

In the next blog, I want to focus on how we treat this amazing gift, your masterpiece, your body.

I decided to treat the dirty window as one of my daily tasks. I wrote in my planner on a specific day and time when I would clean that window! I’m grinning as I write this thinking, "I scheduled a time to clean the window?"; yet that’s how I knew I would get it done.

When we got to the top deck, I was reminded that the rock-climbing wall was there. I watched as some of my friends climbed, and I knew I wanted to get to the top and ring the bell! What about you, what’s something you are wanting to achieve?
