Success - Is It Really What You Think It Is?

Do you feel successful? What does that mean to you?

Do you feel successful? What does that mean to you? Or do you feel because you haven't achieved your dreams and goals that you are a failure? I know I have felt like a failure many times because I didn't achieve what I wanted to achieve. However, because of a conversation with a coaching client, I totally changed how I view success. It was a breath of fresh air for my client when she grasped this concept. It also gave me such peace thinking about this thought surrounding success. Please read to find out what I believe is real success.

On a recent coaching call a client and I were going over an exercise about the pain surrounding not doing the activities she knew would catapult her forward in her business.

The immediate pain she was wanting to avoid was rejection! She said she tended to only attempt those things she knows will be successful! I asked her how she knew they would be successful. She said she made sure she did "safe" things - activities guaranteed to get the outcome she wanted.

As I continued to coach her and ask questions, it became very clear she was avoiding the feeling of failure. I shared with her how failure, in the words of Coach Sean Smith, are judgments we put on the outcome a person wants.

For example, in the direct sales/network marketing world, phone calls are a big part of the business. Yet, it's one of the most avoided and fearful activities. Why? As a coach, I have discovered the emphasis for success is put on the outcome instead of the activity! Again, why? It's because we have been told success is money, cars, position, homes, etc. It's not!!!

Success is the activity. It's the phone call. It's the business card given out. It's the kind word. It's the time spent sharing the product or the opportunity. It's the activity, not the outcome.

None of us have control over the outcome. So why are we told we are a success depending on the outcome? Would you be willing to see yourself as a success because you are doing the activities? Would you be willing to say, "I am successful" because I do what I say I will do?

Success does come from doing the activity. Success does come from doing what you say you will do! Success IS doing the activity. Success IS doing what you say you will do!

I decided to treat the dirty window as one of my daily tasks. I wrote in my planner on a specific day and time when I would clean that window! I’m grinning as I write this thinking, "I scheduled a time to clean the window?"; yet that’s how I knew I would get it done.

When we got to the top deck, I was reminded that the rock-climbing wall was there. I watched as some of my friends climbed, and I knew I wanted to get to the top and ring the bell! What about you, what’s something you are wanting to achieve?
